This year’s race will be an Air Derby format, where participants can choose their own 5-leg, one-day route. Team members, Elise Wheelock, Captain Olga Custodio and Captain Tammie Jo Shults, will launch their route from Boerne, TX the second week of June. The team will fly a normally aspirated, piston powered, Piper Pilot 100i—the latest addition to the Piper trainer product line up.

The oldest of its kind, the Air Race Classic has long been the lead event in women’s air racing. With pilots ranging in age from 17 to 90 years old, this diverse group of participants represents a wide range of backgrounds, career groups, and flight experience. Each of these participants playing a critical function as role models for future aviators.

“Role models, like Elise, Tammie Jo and Olga have each lead the charge with their own list of “firsts” in our industry”, said Jackie Carlon, Senior Director of Marketing for Piper Aircraft. “This team truly embraces the legacy that past female aviators have created and they themselves have helped pave that way for a new generation of pilots. Young females need to continue to see more examples of successful women throughout our industry—flying aircraft, working on airplanes as aviation maintenance technicians, and leading global airline operations from the C suite to inspire and motivate them—it is up to us to continue to mentor the next generation of aviators.”

“I am honored to have the opportunity to participate in this year’s Air Race. I am excited to fly alongside these aviation legends, who are also my role models”, said Elise Wheelock, Piper Aircraft Fleet Sales Representative.  “Olga and Tammie Jo have inspired me personally and have helped female pilots everywhere by paving the way with their drive and enthusiasm for aviation. These women are a huge part of the reason I am a pilot today.”

Tammie Jo Shults

Tammie Jo Shults possessed an early interest in flying, but she faced various obstacles on her path to becoming a military pilot. Applying her lifelong trait of perseverance, she eventually became one of the first female F/A-18 Hornet pilots in the United States Navy.

After concluding her Navy career, she became a pilot for Southwest Airlines. Tammie Jo’s incredible history and talent received wide acclaim on April 17, 2018, when she successfully landed a Southwest Boeing 737 after an engine exploded at high altitude, causing multiple system failures and a rapid depressurization. The successful landing of Flight 1380 in Philadelphia saved 148 total lives, including passengers and crew, as detailed in her captivating novel, Nerves of Steel.

Tammie Jo and her husband Dean live in Texas, and Dean also enjoys flying for Southwest Airlines. The couple has two adult children and are committed to living out their faith and serving in their community. They are active in their church and volunteer at a school focusing on at-risk youth. While Captain Shults retired from commercial flying in September 2020, she continues to dedicate herself to volunteer piloting and serving on the board, alongside Dean, of Angel Flight South Central.

Travel like a pro with these six tips as the summer travel season officially kicks off

Photo by Matt Hardy on Pexels.com

It is memorial day weekend, which is the official start of the summer travel season. If you are flying this weekend or making plans to fly this weekend, abide by these six suggestions to make things go smoothly.

Use a travel planner app or website

Many airlines and travel websites have great ways to help with your travel planning, whether you are travelling this summer by air, rail or car. Delta Airlines has their new travel planning site, Amtrak has theirs, and if travelling by car, you might use AAA or Rand McNally’s sites as they are both very good.

Check all TSA, airline, and local airport requirements

Be aware of all the requirements you will need to meet with all aspects of your trip. From the airport you are leaving from and the airport you are going to; the airline you are flying; the TSA; the hotel or city you will be staying. All are vital to know so it does not catch you off guard and you are well-prepared for your trip. Will they require masks, vaccinations, luggage size, extra deposits, etc?

The TSA has updated its list of approved liquids and its prohibited items, so it is best to be aware so you are not unnecessarily having to through things away or have confiscated at the airport before security check in. Obviously, you will want to bring a government issued identification with you as well as proof you have reserved a flight. It is possible to go without; however, the hassle involved is time-consuming so plan to leave for the airport earlier than usual if you go without ID.

Photo by Alexandr Podvalny on Pexels.com

Your airline may have other restrictions, like the size of your checked and carryon luggage. The standard checked luggage for U.S. domestic flying is around 62 linear feet (height, width, and depth) for your checked bag, yet it is best to check with your airline’s specific requirement. In addition, most airlines limit checked baggage to 50 pounds without incurring an extra charge, and again, your airline may be different. Most airlines will let you on their planes with a carry-on bag of 22 inches and a personal item such as a purse. Going above an airline’s limits will probably because for you being delayed as they pull what you were planning to take with you onto the plane, only for it needing to be checked and put in with all the other checked luggage (causing you an extra delay at your destination airport).

Some airlines will allow you no free checked bags, others will allow you to have one or two free checked bags. Also, depending upon which credit card you used to purchase your flight’s ticket, it may enable you more benefits such as free checked bags, airport lounge access, and more. For example, if you use an American Express credit card to buy your ticket, depending upon which card you use, you could be in for many positive benefits.

It is also important to know about what, if any, restrictions your hotel or Airbnb will have during your stay. Some hotels are still not offering daily maid service and have limited free breakfast, fitness rooms, and even coffee in the guest rooms.

Have CLEAR or TSA Pre-Check to speed through the airports

As mentioned in the prior section, depending upon your travel rewards credit card, it may pay for TSA Pre-Check fees. While CLEAR and TSA Pre-Check offer an expedited way to get through the airport, they are invasive. Not that your privacy is well protected when you fly commercially anyway, CLEAR and TSA Pre-Check do offer convenience, especially when you are running late and need to get to your gate quickly.

CLEAR and CLEAR Pass enable travelers to simply use their biometrics to glide through airport security. TSA Pre-Check and TSA Global Entry makes one a “trusted traveller” in the eyes of the U.S. Government and can move through airport security almost as quickly as CLEAR passengers. CLEAR is still not available at all airports, which is why many opt for TSA’s Global Entry program. CLEAR has also started its Health Pass program to show one’s vaccination against COVID-19.

Get Wi-Fi for your flight(s)

Photo via Delta Airlines

Depending upon which credit card you use and/or the airline you travel, your flight’s Wi-Fi may be included in the cost of your ticket, other airlines or flights may offer Wi-Fi at an extra cost which can be paid during your flight, or maybe your airline or your particular flight may not offer Wi-Fi at all. You will want to make sure you are using a VPN and other protections for your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled devices as there are often some unscrupulous people traveling in near vicinity of you.

Use your airline’s app

Having your airline’s app on your phone or tablet makes life very simple. From getting instant notifications of gate and flight changes to having your boarding pass, having an airline’s app will help make your flight easier. Also included in most airline’s apps will be airport diagrams of gates, restrooms, and stores at the airport you are departing and arriving, as well as the requirements you may need to follow. Some will require their app, if you wish to use an airline’s Wi-Fi and other services.

Check weather and destination alternatives

Photo by Josh Hild on Pexels.com

It is vital to know what the weather and requirements there may be in the state you are travelling. They have lifted most restrictions in most states; however, there could be a few dangling restrictions such as mask wearing, etc. you should know. Having an app for the weather on your phone is very helpful regarding planning what to wear and what activities you will plan for your trip.

Italy opening up for American travelers

Photo by Vitor Almeida on Pexels.com

Delta Air Lines’ COVID-tested flights between the U.S. and Italy will open to all customers effective May 16, following the Italian government lifting entry restrictions enabling American leisure travelers to visit the country for the first time in more than a year.

“Delta was the first U.S. airline to launch quarantine-free service to Italy, and our COVID-tested flights have proved a viable means to restart international travel safely,” said Alain Bellemare, Delta’s E.V.P and President – International. “It is encouraging that the Italian government has taken this step forward to reopen the country to leisure travelers from the U.S. on our dedicated protocol flights and further supporting economic recovery from the global pandemic.”

Delta flyers currently have several choices of nonstop COVID-tested services to Italy, including:

  • Five-times-a-week between Atlanta and Rome, increasing to daily May 26
  • Daily service between New York-JFK and Milan
  • Three-times-a-week from JFK to Rome, increasing to daily July 1

Delta will launch three more nonstop routes this summer: New York-JFK to Venice beginning July 2, as well as Atlanta to Venice and Boston to Rome beginning Aug. 5—making Delta the largest carrier between the U.S. and Italy. They operate all Delta flights to Italy with partner Alitalia.

Existing service to Rome and Milan will continue to be operated by the 293-seat Airbus A330-300, while the 226-seat Boeing 767-300 will operate the additional routes. All of their aircraft feature lie-flat Delta One seats, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin service and are equipped with Wi-Fi and personal seat-back screens with complimentary premium entertainment options.

To fly on Delta’s COVID-tested flights from the U.S. to Italy, they require all travelers to complete mandatory testing, both before departure and on arrival, regardless of their vaccination status. After receiving a negative test, customers will not need to quarantine in Italy and can resume their travels.

Italy is the fourth European destination Delta will offer to leisure flyers this summer following Iceland and Greece (effective May 28), which customers can reach from multiple gateways across the U.S. Delta is also launching brand-new service to Dubrovnik, Croatia from New York-JFK beginning July 2.

National Libertarian Party and Florida Libertarian Party make statements on the potential for vaccine passports

Libertarians are coming out strongly against mask mandates and being pro active against the idea of vaccine passports to travel. Yesterday, the Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County came out strongly encouraging its county government to end its mask mandate, not because the State of Florida does not have a mask mandate, but because of the many legitimate scientific studies published at the CDC and NIH, noting their relative ineffectiveness in the real world. Now the national Libertarian Party and the Libertarian Party of Florida are pre-empting any notion of the federal or state governments imposing a “vaccine passport.” Most of the controversy seems to be centered on domestic travel via commercial means and not international travel, as many countries have long required various vaccines for entry.

Photo by Alex Azabache on Pexels.com

We have noted vaccine passports as a way for the public to feel more comfortable traveling commercial domestically, as they would know who has been vaccinated against COVID-19 and who has not. But there is still much not known about the FDA authorized for emergency use vaccines (not have been approved), most notably how long the protection will last against COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2. Some studies show only six months, while other studies show protection past eight months. One’s DNA and other health factors come into play as to the protection level one will receive and how long they continue to receive the protection against the virus. Meanwhile, requiring proof of one’s vaccine has not been under discussion for other seasonal viruses, like influenza or other respiratory illnesses, which can spread through the air or by touch.

Yesterday, the CDC stated it was safe for Americans to travel domestically via commercial means (airlines, train, etc.) if they have been vaccinated, even though CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky encourages people not to travel. Walensky isn’t the only government official giving mixed messages regarding COVID-19 and vaccine passports. On March 30, 2021, the White House said Biden would not support a government created vaccine passport and would leave it to the private sector, yet this notion seemed to be contrary to an article in the Washington Post, published the day before quoting five HHS officials stated on the condition of anonymity, that the federal government is working on a way to confirm travelers have been vaccinated. It remains unclear if travelers will be required to carry a “vaccine passport” and if it will be a government imposed mandate for commercial travel within the United States, or if this will be left to the private sector.

On March 30, 2021, the Libertarian Party of Florida put forth the following statement, signed by its Chairperson, Steven Nekhaila:

The Libertarian Party of Florida stands steadfastly AGAINST efforts by the Federal government and any efforts by the State and Local governments to institute a Covid vaccine passport or any other state involvement in documenting or restricting one’s freedom of movement.
This past year, we had the Federal government declare masks did not work, only so they could horde masks, and then declare face coverings adequate.
We had Pfizer and other companies develop a vaccine within 72hrs of receiving the DNA sequence for Sars-Cov-2, yet, the FDA and CDC went against their own memorandum by restricting the expedited rollouts of vaccine development and testing.
We had the FDA, CDC, and CMS, work in tandem to shutdown laboratories testing for Covid19, including the University of Washington lab, which was shutdown twice, while the CDC continued to provide botched test kits.
We had businesses shutdown, commerce halted, rights degraded, and law abiding citizens stripped of their livelihood as well as their lives at the hands of a small oligarch of hypocritical legislators.
We were the only political party to stand up for your rights during this entire proceeding, we are the only ones willing to stick our necks out for what is right even when it is unpopular, and we will remain the only ones who continue to fight for what is right even with our backs against the wall and with a thousand voices shouting us down.
Imagine what outcome would have been without these petty dictators in positions of power, with Libertarians ingrained at the local, state, and Federal levels to lead the charge against government intrusion? The United States would be a better place. It takes your help to get us there.
That is what the Libertarian Party is all about, we are protectors of what is righteous, which is not always what is popular.
We are guided by principle, while others are guided by fear.
WE, the Party of Principle, dedicate ourselves to you, in service to Floridians who fight for Liberty to have a political home, and a political body which serves as the centrifugal force of our movement.
And we are not stopping.

Similarly, the national Libertarian Party adopted the following resolution:

WHEREAS; the Federal, State, and Local governments of the United States have been inept in the handling of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic and have not been forthright, righteous, nor consistent in their advice and legislation.
WHEREAS; pharmaceutical companies had the vaccine developed for COVID19 disease as early as 72hrs after the DNA sequence was released from Chinese researchers, however the FDA disregarded their own memorandum on the expedited handling of vaccine research and deployment stifling lifesaving technology.
WHEREAS; the Federal government has lied about the usefulness of masks, only to hoard the effective N95 masks for themselves, and then later reversed the position after masks were bought off the market by the public sector.
WHEREAS; by March 2020, the CDC had tested 10,000 people in the United States for COVID19, where South Korea was testing 10,000 per day by forming an open public-private partnership. The CDC, FDA, and CMS worked in tandem to shutdown private laboratories, such as the private University of Washington lab twice, for privately testing positive COVID19 cases. The CDC botched their tests which were rendered scientifically inaccurate while private sector kits were being shipped overseas for use elsewhere.
WHEREAS; the Federal, State, and Local governments across the United States degraded civil liberties, levied steep fines against peaceful people, and took away livelihood and lives through the closure of transportation, businesses, and lockdown orders while hypocritical oligarchs defied those same orders.
WHEREAS; governments stifled the response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic every step of the way, while the private sector researchers, doctors, nurses, non-profits, and businesses lifted the entire load of relief in spite of governments interference.
WHEREAS; these same government officials now wish to implement a COVID19 vaccination passport for the purpose of restricting travel and maximizing obedience, further perpetuating the technocratic surveillance state.
THEREFORE; be it resolved that the Libertarian National Committee stands in stark defiance of all attempts by government to interfere with the private sector response to COVID19 as well as the degradation of civil liberties and livelihood at the hands of legislators. We oppose vaccine passports and any government mandated documentation, surveillance, restrictions, mandates, or laws which tread on the rights of the people. We stand in service of those seeking freedom in the United States as the centrifugal force of liberty.
FURTHERMORE; the Libertarian National Committee recognizes Dr. Li Wenliang, who was arrested by Chinese police in Wuhan, China for blowing the whistle on the discovery of SARS-CoV-2 virus at the Wuhan General Hospital. Dr. Wenliang was released after signing an affidavit stating he committed “spreading rumors” and was later acquitted after public outrage. Dr. Wenliang died at the age of thirty-three due to encountering the virus by treating patients with COVID-19. Dr. Wenilang was the first casualty by the government in the war against our rights and deserves our unwavering respect.

Boca Raton Airport installs new LED rotating beacon for pilots

On March 10, 2021, the Boca Raton Airport will become the first airport in the United States to install the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified, Hali-Brite LED Rotating Beacon.

A rotating beacon is a visual navigation aid that projects a beam of light used by pilots to visually locate a lighted airport at night. For civil airports, like Boca Raton Airport, the beacon rotates to produce alternate clear and green flashes of light visible to pilots from the air.

The new LED Rotating Beacon being installed at Boca Raton Airport is the first of its kind to be approved by the FAA for use in public airports. “Upgrading the rotating beacon to LED offers many benefits and is in keeping with the Boca Raton Airport Authority’s goal to enhance safety and implement cost-efficient energy saving measures,” said Clara Bennett, Executive Director of the Boca Raton Airport Authority.

Compared with metal halide lamps used in traditional beacons, the LED rotating beacon offers significant energy savings, reduces light pollution, and reduces long-term maintenance.

Specific benefits include:

  • Energy savings: The new L-802A(L) LED rotating beacon has a higher light output than the huge 36” traditional rotating beacons you see at many airports and uses a quarter of the power over traditional Beacon technology. The LED beacon uses the power equivalent of about (2) 100watt incandescent light bulbs. So, the same power used to light a small garage- is now used to light up the sky for pilots.
  • Light pollution: The LED technology in the beacon allows Boca Airport to have a much more “defined” light beam. The light “wash” up to the sky and down on neighborhoods, if far less with the new LED beacon.
  • Long-term maintenance: Traditional Rotating beacons required frequent bulb replacement. The new LED beacon typical lamp life is 12 years.
  • Designed and hand built in United States of America.

Bahamas: U.S. residents, you are no longer welcome here (unless you have your own plane or charter)

In a complete reversal by the Bahamian government from earlier this month, it has chosen to severely restrict leisure travel from the United States. On July 17, 2020, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism had set guidelines for opening up the country; however, is now rescinding that invitation onto their shores.

Because of a continued increase in COVID-19 cases in the United States, and an uptick in cases in The Bahamas, the country has closed borders to commercial flights and vessels from the U.S. effective Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at midnight. They will permit outgoing flights to accommodate any current U.S. visitors scheduled to return.

After July 22, private flights and charters from the United States, and pleasure craft and yachts will be permitted throughout the Island Of The Bahamas – except for Freeport. Travelers from Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union are also permitted to visit, and required to present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test from a referenced lab, taken no more than 10 days prior to the date of travel.

New All-Cargo Rights Added to U.S.-Jamaica Air Transport Agreement

Washington, D.C. — On May 10, 2018, U.S. Chargé d’ Affaires Eric Khant and Jamaica’s Minister of Transport and Mining Robert Montague signed an agreement to amend the U.S.-Jamaica Air Transport Agreement of 2008 to include seventh-freedom rights for all-cargo operations, effective as of the date of signing. Seventh-freedom rights permit flights between a second and third country without touching the airline’s home country. These rights facilitate the efficient and cost-effective movement of goods, strengthen global express delivery cargo networks, enhance connectivity and competitiveness, and promote economic growth.

Air Transport Agreements provide air traffic rights for airlines to offer internationalair-jamica-plane passenger and cargo services. The modern Open Skies Air Transport Agreement between Jamaica and the United States eliminates government intervention in commercial airline decisions about routes, capacity, and pricing. By increasing market access, the Agreement enables airlines of both of our countries to provide affordable, convenient, and efficient air service for consumers and businesses and is a valuable tool to promote economic and employment growth. Though don’t expect cargo of marijuana on the northerly routes except by the black market.

The U.S. government’s commitment to the Caribbean is outlined in the Caribbean 2020 strategy – the U.S. policy framework to enhance partnerships in security, energy, diplomacy, prosperity, education, and health in the Caribbean region.
